Such is evident in the vastly different works of Walt Whitman and Keats, whose “Leaves of Grass” and “Ode to a Nightingale” respectively, deal with the contrast of life and death to antithetical purpose and effect. Whitman’s epic poem goes to great lengths both to appreciate the splendors of life and to reflect on its promise. His view of death is not one of lamentation but of hope. His perspective of it as a transformation is evident in his lucid allusion to nature’s tendency toward reincarnation. Budding life, he asserts, is proof that death is not an ending but a step in the cycle. Keats also takes the approach that death is something to which we must willingly succumb, but he does so with a much grimmer outlook.
